To tone or not to tone?

That is the question.

Well, at least for some. Those who already use a toner know there’s no turning back. Others simply have no idea what a toner is.

So upon the release of our new witch hazel toning tonic, Logic, allow us to educate you. Here’s the 411 on what a toner actually does and why you should be toning.

What is a toner, anyway?

In short, toner is a lightweight liquid that is used after cleansing to effectively complete the process and clarify the skin. Formulas differ, but mostly toners are used to remove excess residue like dust, pollution and impurities that can linger on the skin after cleansing.

Many cleansers can also alter the skin’s natural pH levels, so toners work to restore balance. They boost the skin’s natural hydration, meaning less oil production throughout the day, preventing oily complexions and acne.

Toning formulas can also work to shrink the appearance of pores, even out skin-tone and can be used as a spot-treatment to target blemishes. Ultimately your skin will be left feeling toned, taut and refreshed.

How do I use it?

Simples. After cleansing your skin with warm water, splash your face with cold water. Then saturate a cotton pad with your toning formula and swipe it to your face and neck.

Focus on areas that tend to trap dirt, like your T-zone. (That’s your forehead, nose and chin, FYI).

A good toner will also boost your moisturiser, so best to work it into a comprehensive skincare regime. For most skin types, we recommend kicking off with our Ritual face cleanser and Rock & Roll Suicide scrub, followed by Logic to even out skin tone. Finish with Gameface for a light finish. All Triumph & Disaster products are made from naturally active ingredients, so they work hard for most skin types, including those with sensitive skin.

What's the difference in usage for guys and girls?

Not a lot really. Logic is best used following cleanser for both male and female skin types.

That said, Logic makes a great alternative to aftershave, as it soothes your skin and saves you from adding petrol to the fire. It will also reduce the appearance of pores, particularly important here as shaving can often aggravate and increase pore size.

For women, the natural actives in Logic make it an effective alternative to makeup remover – one that doesn't strip the skin.

What should I be looking for in a toner?

Many toners use alcohol, which can dry out the skin, so opt for a more gentle toner with naturally active ingredients. Logic’s honest formulation clears and tones without stripping or dehydrating sensitive skin.

Alpine Willow herb is one of the stars in Logic’s naturally-active lineup, clinically proven to significantly shrink and reduce pore size, while balancing sebum production. While Witch Hazel is in a league of its own for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and astringent properties. It is generously supported in this formulation by Tasmanian Pepper Fruit extract which calms, soothes and treats skin.
