My Rituals: Nick Vodicka

A man that needs little introduction, Nick Vodicka is the brains behind Hey Gents.

His life as editor of a budding publication means he is kept busy, wearing many hats and juggling even more responsibilities. But look at him and he's like a duck on water. You wouldn't know by his calm demeanour all the work that keeps Hey Gents running smoothly.

We quizzed Nick on his many rituals, all responsible for keeping him so grounded.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?

Open all the blinds and windows in my apartment. I like to make it as light as possible and let in fresh air. I feel like it just makes my mind a little bit clearer.

What’s your morning ritual?

I make breakfast at home every morning. Then there’s a whole bunch of different apps that I check to catch up with anything that’s happened overnight. I like to get some emails done during this time, plan out my day, sometimes squeeze in a quick workout, then hop in the shower before heading to the office.

How do you prepare for those very busy days?

A to-do list and lots of coffee.

What’s your most important daily ritual?

It may sound a little odd but I purposely park my car several blocks away from my apartment each day, just so I can skate to and from it. I find the feeling of rolling super relaxing and far more enjoyable than jumping straight in the car. It's just something simple that I look forward to every day.

What’s the ritual that breathes you most life?

I try to sit in the sun for at least 20 minutes a day – it just makes me feel a bit healthier.

What’s the ritual that most brings you peace?

A swim in the ocean. I don’t get to do it as much as I’d like but when I do, it never disappoints. Sydney is pretty magical in terms of beaches.

How do you wind down at night?

I take ages to get to sleep so reading a book or some kind of article helps my eyes get tired. I don’t really read fiction, I prefer to read about the history of brands I like or people I’m inspired by.

What do your skincare rituals look like?

I’m really interested in skincare. I look at buying quality products as an investment. My routine includes cleansing, toning and moisturising, then exfoliating and a deep cleansing mask once or twice a week.

How about exercise?

Setting aside big chunks of time to go to the gym doesn’t really work for me. I find that I do more exercise overall when I do quick sessions more frequently. I aim for a 20 minute, at-home body resistance workout every couple of days (just push-ups, planks, and variations of the two), and squeeze in some runs when I can too.

Who do you best like to practise rituals with?

My girlfriend. We try to have breakfast together most days and sometimes work out together too.

Favourite background music for your rituals?

In the mornings and for work I like something fairly chilled that still has a beat. Recently I’ve been listening to Toro y Moi and Hawaii94. For skating or working out, something faster and heavier.

What’s the one ritual you could never give up?

I don’t want to say I could never give it up, but I love having a red wine after work with my girlfriend. It’s a nice way to start winding down after work and talk to each other about our days.
